Testosterone and Late Onset Hypogonadism

Testosterone is a hormone necessary for reproduction. According to reproductive scientists Jagar and colleagues (2013), testosterone deficiency in men is a common problem. A low level of this androgen is often the consequence of various diseases, and it can be associated with the pathogenesis of many more conditions. According to researchers Moreley and associates, testosterone therapy helps men with hypogonadism. The scientists conducted a controlled clinical trial and evaluated 80 men who were age 74 to 79 years old. Half of the men received testosterone boosters and the other half served as controls, receiving a placebo drug. Testosterone enanthate was given at 200 mg/mL intramuscularly every two weeks over the course of three months. After therapy, the researchers tested muscle strength, balance, blood cholesterol levels, prostate-specific antigen levels (PSA), and additional diagnostic blood tests. The men who received the injection of this androgen hormone enjoyed better hand muscle strength, more bioavailable circulating testosterone, and improved endurance.

Obese Middle-Aged Men Benefit from Testosterone Replacement

In another study, testosterone investigators Marin and colleagues studied 23 middle-aged men who were obese. These men also had low levels of testosterone and low energy. After treatment, the men were measure for visceral fat mass, subcutaneous fat mass, and lean body mass. Also, the researchers assessed glycemic control and insulin resistance, PSA levels, cholesterol levels, and blood pressure. They concluded that men who received testosterone replacement therapy have metabolic improvements, decreased visceral fat mass, and improved energy. Additionally, these scientists reported that the testosterone treatment provided middle-aged obese men with enhanced well-being and cardiovascular protection.

Testosterone Increases Spatial Cognition in Aging Men

Another group of researchers, Janowsky and associates, report that testosterone increases spatial cognition in aging men. This hormone plays a role in many aspects of behavior, according to experts. In a double-blind controlled study, 56 older men were given testosterone replacement therapy for three months. The scientists evaluated them for spatial cognition, motor speed, verbal recall, visual memory, and mood. The participants who received the androgen had 150% increase in spatial cognition, but no change in the other factors. They concluded that testosterone replacement could benefit aging men and enhance spatial cognition.

In 2012, a team of scientist led by Dr. Tambi studied the extract of Eurycoma longifolia as a testosterone booster for men with LOH and low T.
