Kidney stone treatment is based on the type of stones that have developed in your kidneys. First of all, you should visit a clinical lab or diagnostic specialist that will help you determine whether it is a small stone or a large one. Kidney stone treatments for women are comparatively easier if the stones aren’t large. The process is less invasive and more usage of drugs will be required.
Large stones
These are usually deposited because of disturbances in the functioning of thyroid or parathyroid gland. Such disturbances cause hormonal changes in a long run so the faster you diagnose it, the better. Large stones are by deposition of carbonates of calcium or potassium. Their treatment can be carried out by:
1) Lithotripsy – It is technique using ultra sound waves to break down large stones into smaller fragments. The ultra sound waves hit the stones and cause them to break into smaller pieces. After that, with the help of drugs, these smaller stones are allowed to pass through urine.
2) Surgery – This can also be called as laser treatment which either removes the entire stone at a time or the laser breaks it down to smaller stones. This treatment is definitely invasive and may cause some disturbances in urinary tract or some bruising in the abdominal wall.
Larger stones show different symptoms as compared to smaller ones. Usually you won’t feel anything until the pain really gets worse. So visit a doctor before any further complications occur.
Small stones
Small stones are usually broken down to even smaller stones which facilitates them to pass through urine painlessly. Other forms of treatment include:
1) Medication – Drugs are given so as to dissolve the stones or convert them into smaller pieces. These drugs are especially for kidney stone treatments.
2) Pain killers – Pain killers or non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used to manage the pain that is caused when the stones are passing through the urinary tract.
3) Fluid management – Your physician will prescribe you to drink as much fluids as possible. Mostly water is the best. Patient is supposed to drink at least 3 liters of water daily.
A strict diet is followed after the removal of kidney stones to prevent them from ever reoccurring and having to go thought it all again. The treatment plan sounds simple but if you aren’t a doctor, you shouldn’t treat yourself. It could be dangerous and may cause further complications.
